If you’re a woodworker, you understand how hard it can be to pass up on something that could potentially be exactly the piece of wood you’re looking for at some unknown future point.
"Pieces that, as Dad tells it, please the eye and invite the hand."
Yes! You know you've made something nice when people instinctively reach out to feel it.
I think you're onto a good combination here; woodworking & writing, and I really enjoyed this essay.
I'll be back for more :-)
But I wouldn't be an aspiring ornery, old git if I didn't find something to complain about; May I venture an old pet grumble of mine? The expression "makes the grain / colour / etc. POP..." should be unceremoniously stuffed in and old paper bag together with a wad of linseed oil drenched rags and set alight.
Now I'm off for a sunday stroll with a little camera in my pocket. I think of it as 'walking with enhanced seeing' :-) Bye!
I’m currently trying to burn through my stash of miscellaneous 60 through 220 grit paper so I can justify placing an order for some 3M cubitron paper. I’ve heard great things.
I’m doing the same! I saw on Woodworker’s Hardware (I think?) something about new sanding discs from 3M. I think it’s maybe similar quality to the Abranet paper, but less expensive, so I was thinking of trying it out. Let me know if you get the chance to try out the cubitron paper!
Thank you for that recommendation on Abranet - it’s these little tips that are the reward we get for spending time reading not working with wood. One day I’ll buy an orbital sander and good to know what discs to use. Still hand tool heavy in my endeavours to move beyond a wood work hacker
Glad to hear that was useful! I've been away from the newsletter for the summer—trying to figure out if I have anything more useful in the future to say :) I hope your woodworking and other adventures are going well!
What a great idea! Thanks for sharing. I was thinking about your incredible wood turning work this week during my fumbling efforts at the lathe. Hope your work is going well 😊

Your comment made me chuckle. I'll endeavor not to use too many cliches in the future!

I also love Abranet, and I use the old ones to cover the drain hole when potting plants.
